Our artists work with selected subjects on a personalized journey to answer the questions, "If you could be your superhero of choice, who would you be - and why?" and "How would you want to be pictured?"
The resulting paintings and the stories of these women are displayed at hospitals, clinics and other places where they can be celebrated, and the community can be encouraged and inspired.
Visitors, community group members and the general public get to "Show us Your Superhero", coloring or drawing their own superhero image and writing their own superhero stories.
Minnesota-based artist Barbara Porwit was a single mom working full time and trying to find time for the studio, when suddenly - it seemed everyone she knew got breast cancer: not just one or two, but 6, 8, ten or more women she held dear were diagnosed in a 6 month period of time.
Then her friend Jill started posting what "superpower" she got every day based on the music that was playing during her radiation treatments (ie like Spiderman and the radioactive spider bite...); another friend posted pictures of heading to chemo in her superhero goggles and cape --- (!)
Barbara decided the world needed to see just how amazing these women were. And the Breast Cancer Superhero Portrait Project was born.
With enough funding and new team members, we hope to find purchasers for the original paintings and link artists with communities and volunteers who can take this project to a new chapter....
WE NEED YOU!
We are looking for a few key players who are passionate about healing arts and women's health to take the Breast Cancer Superheroes to a new chapter.
Could this be you or someone you know? We need dedicated, talented people on our team.
